How the line is measured

Two tests measure this line, and they are not equal witnesses.

The wired test runs a full-rate speed test from a computer wired to the network over a 10GbE link. That link can move enough data to measure a 5,000 Mbps connection, so the wired result is the page's verdict.

The gateway self-test is the router's built-in daily speed test. Its test engine cannot push multi-gigabit traffic — upload traffic least of all — so it under-reports. A self-test of 900 Mbps means the line delivered at least 900 Mbps that morning; it does not mean the line tops out there. Its numbers are a floor, not the line's capability.

Upload gets the same billing as download on this page because the plan is symmetric: upload is rated the same 5,000 Mbps. A speed page that grades only download hides half the product.
