Our home's internet is a Frontier Fiber connection rated 5 Gbps (5 gigabits per second) in both directions. This page grades it against that rating — upload weighted equal to download. It updates once a day.

How the connection is measured

Two tests measure this connection every day: a computer testing the connection, and the router testing itself.

The wired test is the verdict. A computer inside the house — connected by cable, with every link between it and the internet able to carry more than the plan's 5 Gbps — runs Ookla Speedtest, the same test as speedtest.net, once a day against a nearby test server. Nothing in that path is slower than the plan, so the number that comes back is what the connection actually delivered.

The gateway self-test is the router testing itself. The router — the box that carries all of the home's traffic to the internet — runs its own built-in speed test each morning. On the same morning (August 10, 2026), the two tests ran minutes apart: the router's test read 4,585 Mbps download where the wired test read 5,145, and 1,301 Mbps upload where the wired test read 2,113. (Speeds here are in Mbps — megabits per second; 1,000 Mbps is 1 Gbps.)

Part of that gap has a measured cause. The router inspects traffic for threats (intrusion prevention) while it tests itself; in a paired test that morning, switching inspection to observe-only raised the self-test's download from 4,391 to 5,013 Mbps. The wired test is not slowed this way — its 5,145 Mbps was measured with inspection fully on.

The two tests also use different test servers. The wired test runs against Ookla Speedtest servers — the same network behind speedtest.net; this page's runs use the server Frontier operates there. The router's self-test uses Ubiquiti's WiFiman test network and picks its server automatically from a mix of Ubiquiti-run and volunteer-hosted machines — ours was assigned a server run by a hosting company in Los Angeles. Why the self-test's upload reads low has not been settled: it reads between 1,300 and 1,400 Mbps in every run — the pattern of a test server that cannot receive any faster — but the router's own sending path has not been ruled out. Either way the self-test reads low, so this page reads it as a floor: a self-test of 900 Mbps means the connection delivered at least 900 Mbps that morning, not that it tops out there. Its numbers are a floor, not the connection's capability.

Upload is graded the same as download on this page because the plan is symmetric: upload is rated the same 5 Gbps. A page that grades only download reports on half of what the plan promises.

The two directions do not perform the same. Download reaches the plan's 5,000 Mbps; upload has never measured above 2,658 Mbps — not at installation in May 2025, not after the repair that fixed download in August 2026. The evidence points at the router, not Frontier: this router model — the UniFi UCG Fiber — tops out near 2–2.5 Gbps sending upstream on multi-gigabit fiber plans, an issue its owners have documented and reported to Ubiquiti since 2025, unfixed in any firmware release through August 2026. Other owners on Frontier's 5 Gig tier measure the same ceiling, and one measured Frontier's own router delivering full rated upload on the same feed. The deciding test for this connection — a computer plugged directly into the fiber modem — has not been run yet.

The gateway's built-in test reads low, upload especially. Each of its points is a floor — the connection delivered at least that much that morning — never a measurement of the connection's capability. The wired series is the one graded against the plan.

Two events are visible in the record. On June 19, 2026 the router was replaced; the blue series before and after that date comes from two different routers testing themselves, which is why the blue lines look different on either side of that date. And from before the record begins until the morning of August 10, 2026, download ran near 2,200 Mbps — 44% of the plan. That morning, a support call had Frontier reprovision the service (re-send the service settings to the modem) and the fiber modem was power-cycled; full download returned within minutes. The record cannot show which of the two actions fixed it, so the troubleshooting steps below include both. The step up in the record that morning is that repair.

Troubleshooting a slow connection

Two steps fixed this connection's three-month slowdown in one morning. Do them in order; re-test after each.

1. Power-cycle the fiber modem. The modem — the ONT, short for optical network terminal — is the small box where Frontier's fiber enters the house. Unplug its power, wait ten seconds, plug it back in; it reconnects within a few minutes. This connection's modem delivered half speed for three months with every light green, and nothing on our side reported it.

2. Call Frontier support and ask them to reprovision the service. Frontier support: (800) 921-8101. Reprovisioning means Frontier pushes your service profile to the modem again; it takes the agent a few minutes and costs nothing. On this connection, both steps were done the same morning and full speed returned within minutes.

Re-test with a wired computer where possible — a Wi-Fi test can read a gigabit or more below what the connection delivers.
